Storyteller Information
We’re so glad you’re attending and considering sharing your story at an icuTalks storytelling event (MOTH-inspired). Here is some helpful information for potential storytellers.
How Our Storytelling Night Works:
We are doing a MOTH-inspired event which means we will model the speaking format of 10 speakers who do not exceed 5 minutes each, There is a singular topic.
The competition part for our icuTalks storytelling event (MOTH-inspired) is that we will have 3 judges who rate on vulnerability, inspiration, and courage! We are not scoring performance or pain. We are honoring truth, courage, and human connection.
Tips For Storytellers/Speakers:
-
We will be starting at 6pm.
-
Stories should be a maximum of 5 minutes. When you are at 4min and 30 seconds you will hear a Tamborine to let you know you have 30 seconds remaining. When you hit 5 mins the judges will start clapping and your talk is over.
-
Stories must be true, about you, and involve some change of transformation from beginning to end.
-
Stories should be told without notes. Just you, the mic, and the audience.
-
Stories may be funny, serious, or a bit of both.
-
Stories should have high stakes. Ask yourself, “ Why is this story so important to me?”
-
Have an attention grabbing first line and ending line. Don’t meander.
History of MOTH Events
The original Moth event was founded in 1997 by poet and novelist George Dawes Green, who wanted to recreate the feeling of sultry summer evenings in his native Georgia, when moths were attracted to the light on the porch where he and his friends would gather to spin spellbinding tales. Since then, MOTH events have evolved.
Today, MOTH events are a open-mic storytelling competition where ordinary people share true, personal stories on a specific theme
